The Bass Player from Hand Job

"What is punk? Punk is not a what is. That is like saying what is dog? You can't say that. Elvis is punk. Jesus bless his soul is punk. Satan is not punk. Satan is a sarcastic bastard!"

"What is punk?!" squeals the mysterious Bass Player from Hand Job as if reposing some remarkably stupid question. Anyone without an answer would have been out of place at the Bowery Poetry Club on Saturday, where erstwhile Minutemen bassist Mike Watt hosted the 25th anniversary celebration of his deceased band's crowning achievement, the double-album Double Nickels on the Dime."

Collection of poems "Splitting Hairs."

The Bass Player from Hand Job is the last incarnation of a character that started as a black and white movie throwback. He is a dark, austere Weimar German figure, linking parts of punk to older traditions. Anarchic, deviant, erotic, heretical, self destructive. The illusion and the hope. A dazed electrocuted camera crew, exposing the lies of the real world he left behind. I am a creationist. It makes more sense.

Looks like a space in Brooklyn will house the art work.

2009 was highlighted by the performance in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Minutemen's album Double Nickels On The Dime.
